Peripheral Artery Occlusive Disease
Peripheral artery occlusive disease – in short – PAOD, term is used for all disease those are related to blockage within vassels so that peripheral artery occlusive disease is also known as peripheral vascular disease (PVD). Peripheral artery occlusive disease may leads atherosclerosis, embolism, thrombus formation also.
peripheral artery occlusive disease may happen in any arteries of our different body parts.
It commonly develops in the leg arteries, including the main arteries of the thighs known as femoral arteries, main arteries of the knees known as popliteal arteries, and main arteries of the calves called as tibial and peroneal arteries. Sometimes peripheral artery occlusive disease may affect arteries of the shoulders or arms but it happens rarely.
Causes of peripheral artery occlusive disease:
There are various causes due to those peripheral artery occlusive disease may happen.
Sometimes arteries becomes narrow and sudden blocked due to fatty deposition at inner wall of arteries. Because of blockage of arteries blood flow process disturbs and body organs may not receive enough blood. This condition may lead peripheral artery occlusive disease.
Atherosclerosis may also lead peripheral artery occlusive disease. In atherosclerosis,
arteries becomes narrow and blocked due to cholesterol and fatty deposition at inner lining of arteries of any body part.
If a person has diabetes then there is major risk of happening peripheral artery occlusive disease. Smoking may also lead peripheral artery occlusive disease.
Symptoms of peripheral artery occlusive disease:
Symptoms of peripheral artery occlusive disease vary depending on which artery is affected, how completely the artery is narrowed & blocked, and whether the artery is gradually narrowed or suddenly blocked. A variety of symptoms or problems may happen due to peripheral vascular disease or peripheral artery occlusive disease.
Pains in leg muscles while walking and exercise
Severe aching pain in toes or feet.
Treatments of peripheral artery occlusive disease
The main goal of all treatment is to stop progress of disease like to reduce risk of heart attack, stroke, and death due to widespread atherosclerosis. Treatments of peripheral artery occlusive disease include drugs such as those that relieve claudication etc. Angioplasty and surgery are suggested for correcting the immediate problem. They do not cure the whole disease. After angiography Angioplasty is often performed. Angioplasty is followed to relieve problems due to peripheral artery occlusive disease and decrease the chances of surgery. Sometimes it is used in combination with surgery.
