Pericardial Disease
The Pericardium is a fluid sac that encircles the heart in its cavity. Pericardium composed of three layers, Fibrous Pericardium, Epicardium and Parietal Pericardium that keeps track on heart's motion, its position among other organs and protect it from any infections.
When Pericardium has any disorders, then the disease is known as Pericardial Disease or Pericarditis. These disorders can be possible in any layer of pericardium. The causes for pericardial disease are heart attack, heart surgery, cancer, any radiations, drug side effects and any other infections etc.
Pericardial Disease can be occurring suddenly or as a long-lasting disease. The pericardial disease that occurs suddenly is called as Acute Pericarditis. In Acute Pericarditis the Pericardium becomes inflamed and it may be happen due to viral infections. This viral infection irritates pericardium and patients have severe pains in their chest.
Another type of pericardial disease knows as Constrictive Pericarditis in which Fibrous Pericardium, Epicardium and Parietal Pericardium becomes thick due to extra formation of fibrous tissue. Constrictive Pericarditis also affects heart's functions.
Treatment :
Aspirin and NSAIDS are very common and effective drugs for controlling pains of Pericarditis. If medication is proper then Acute Pericarditis may be cure within few weeks and patient may live with no other cardiac diseases. On the other hand Constrictive Pericarditis is quite difficult because surgery is the only treatment for this and it is very difficult.
