Lymphedema

Lymphatic system is system that is consists of lymph vessels, lymph glands and ducts and lymph fluid circulates to all over our body. Lymphatic system protects our body from diseases through lymphocytes, transports the lipids from intestine to the blood and collects and returns interstitial fluid. When Lymphatic system is not able to work properly then Lymphedema situation occurs.

In Lymphedema, lymphatic fluid is collected or grouped between tissues and not properly circulates. Because of dysfunction of lymph fluid, the organ of body where it happen, get swelled. Lymphedema generally happens in arms or legs and sometimes in both legs and arms. The lymphedema affects depends on mild to extreme situation.

Types :

Lymphedema may be classified into primary lymphedema and secondary lymphedema. Primary lymphedema or congenital lymphedema may be found by birth because of genetic disorders in parents and it's a rare case. Secondary lymphedema may be possible in anyone by an event in which lymphatic vessels are interrupted or damaged by any surgery, tumor growth or any mishap.

Treatment :

No cure for lymphedema exists. But can be controlled. Physical activity can improve your condition. There are some useful advices for them, who have lymphedema disease.

    • Bed rest till suggested by doctor
    • Elevation of affected area
    • Compression of affected area
    • Elastic supports required
    • Massage on swelling
    • Exercises for whole body organs
    • Special skin care treatment
