Abdominal Aorta Aneurysm

The largest artery in our body is known as aorta that supplies pure blood from heart to our body organs. When it reaches at our abdomen then this is called as abdominal aorta.
The abdominal aorta supplies blood to our both legs. The word meaning of “aneurysm” is “a widening” means the disease in which abdominal aorta becomes abnormally large or balloons outward, known as Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.

If a person has Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm then it may leads other health problem also. Other synonyms of abdominal aortic aneurysm are aortic diffuse arterial enlargement, atherosclerotic vascular disease, AAA, aortic rupture, atherosclerosis etc.

Causes of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm :

There is no certain causes of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm but there are many risk factors.

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • High serum cholesterol
  • Cigarette smoking - cigarette smoking is very harmful and it not only increases the risk of developing but long term smoking may rupture Abdominal Aortic.
  • Arteritis
  • fungal infection may also lead abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Symptoms of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm :

  • Severe and sudden pains in abdomen
  • Anxiety in many cases
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Abdominal rigidity
  • A pulsing feeling in your abdomen, similar to a heartbeat.

Treatment of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm :


If abdominal aortic aneurysm is at mild condition and symptoms are not very serious the doctos suggests periodic evaluation in which they checks it yearly through ultrasound. But if abdominal aortic aneurysm is at severe condition surgery is last option. If a person has abdominal aortic aneurysm of 2 inches then open surgical aneurysm repair should be followed. Endovascular stent graft is new technology for treating abdominal aortic aneurysm in which thin tubes called catheters that are threaded through our blood vessels. After that surgeon use live x-ray pictures on a video screen to guide a fabric and metal tube, called an endovascular stent graft , to the site of the aneurysm. This process is faster then other surgery.
