A sarcoma is a cancer of the connective or supportive tissue (bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels).
Sarcoma is broken down into two types:
1) Soft tissue tumors
2) Bone tumors.
Osteogenic sarcoma or osteosarcoma is one of the most common childhood bone cancers. Sarcomas are considered primary bone cancers. Soft tissue sarcomas are more common in adults than in children. Sarcomas encompass a group of over 40 different types of tumors. These are named on the site from which they arise. For example, chondrosarcomas arise from cartilage, osteosarcomas arise from bone.
